Journalism as modern history: A responsibility to truth

In today’s fast-moving world, journalists are not merely reporting events—they are writing history in real time. Every story filed, every photograph published, and every fact documented becomes part of the permanent public record, shaping how future generations will understand this era.

Ahmet Görmez, Deputy Director of TRT Türkiye, noted that two or three centuries ago, this responsibility belonged largely to historians. Today, it rests in the hands of journalists who document where society goes, what it does, and how events unfold. Görmez shared these insights while presenting TRT’s global practices and strategic learnings at the Asiavision Coordinators’ Meeting 2026, held from January 21–22 in Kuala Lumpur.

He emphasized that this role carries immense weight; accuracy, honesty, and fairness are not optional ideals but essential obligations.

“Literally, we are writing history. We are documenting wherever we go and whatever we do. We are documenting everything. That is a huge responsibility for us because history needs to be written correctly. We need to be honest in our news and report accurately. History must be written the right way, with the correct facts,” he added.

At the core of journalism lies a commitment to truth. News must be reported with verified facts, undistorted by personal bias, misinformation, or external pressure. Reality must come first. When facts are compromised, history itself becomes flawed.

While journalists may not always have the power to change the world overnight, their work influences outcomes, sparks accountability, and brings hidden truths into the public eye. High-quality reporting has the power to expose corruption, give a voice to the voiceless, and prompt meaningful reform.

In an age of instant information and digital documentation, the responsibility of the journalist has never been greater. Writing history as it happens demands integrity, courage, and an unwavering dedication to factual reporting. Getting the story right today ensures that history is recorded correctly for tomorrow.
