From Disaster to Heroism: Lessons from a tumultuous 2025
As this year draws to a close, we look back on a period defined by upheaval. Conflicts have erupted and disasters—both natural and man-made—have tested our collective resolve. Yet, these incidents do not diminish our humanity; instead, they compel us to become the very best versions of ourselves. Let us reflect on the pivotal events that shaped this year.
The deadliest man-made disaster in Hong Kong’s history
Hong Kong suffered one of its most devastating residential fires when a massive blaze engulfed Wang Fuk Court, a public housing complex in the Tai Po district. The fire spread rapidly through the scaffolding of the eight 31-story towers, burning continuously for 43 hours. At least 161 lives were lost, with dozens more missing or injured. It stands as the city’s deadliest fire in over 70 years.
The tragedy exposed critical systemic failures, sparking a massive investigation into residential maintenance. Authorities uncovered alleged safety protocol violations, including disabled fire alarms and non-functional suppression systems. The use of flammable construction netting and scaffolding was found to have accelerated the inferno. Amidst the heartbreak, stories of heroism emerged: a domestic helper risked her life to carry a newborn baby to safety, embodying the courage found in the darkest hours.
A continent under pressure: Climate and seismic disasters
Asia faced a relentless cascade of climate-related catastrophes in 2025. Floods, landslides, and cyclones affected millions across the continent.
- Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and Malaysia were battered by Cyclones Senyar and Ditwah, leading to mass displacement and infrastructure loss. Southern Thailand, particularly Hat Yai, endured its worst flooding in 25 years.
- East Asia: Typhoon Wipha and Super Typhoon Ragasa tore through the region, injuring hundreds across the Philippines, Taiwan, and China. South Korea faced a brutal monsoon season that killed 23 people and displaced 18,000, while Japan remained on high alert following a series of significant tremors.
- Seismic Crisis: In March 2025, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, claiming thousands of lives and causing extensive damage across the border into Thailand.

Geopolitical friction: The Thailand-Cambodia strife
Long-standing border tensions escalated into armed conflict in July 2025, as fierce clashes broke out near the Ta Muen Thom and Preah Vihear temples. The crisis had deep political repercussions, contributing to the suspension of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra following a leaked conversation with Cambodia’s Hun Sen. She was eventually succeeded by Anutin Charnvirakul in September.
As the ASEAN Chair, Malaysia took a proactive role in mediating the conflict. In October, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump witnessed a ceasefire signing in Kuala Lumpur. Though the peace remains fragile and sporadic clashes have recently resumed, ongoing mediation efforts continue through ASEAN and regional partners, including China.
The rise of Gen Z: A new political era
Across Asia, a wave of youth-led movements reshaped the political landscape. In Nepal, relentless Gen Z-led protests toppled the government, leading to the Prime Minister’s resignation. Similarly, in Bangladesh, mass demonstrations erupted following the tragic death of a youth leader, demanding greater accountability and press freedom. In Indonesia, youth anger over policy discrepancies escalated into widespread social unrest, signaling a generational demand for systemic change.
Tragedy and valor at Bondi Beach
Australia was not immune to the year’s volatility, experiencing a sharp rise in hate-related incidents. This culminated in a horrific mass shooting at Bondi Beach on December 14, during the “Chanukah by the Sea” celebration. The attack left 15 dead and sent shockwaves across the globe.
However, the tragedy was met with extraordinary bravery. Ahmed al Ahmed, 43, heroically tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen. Though he was wounded in the struggle, his actions prevented further loss of life. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese lauded Ahmed as a symbol of national courage and unity.
2025: A Blueprint for unity
While 2025 was defined by fire, flood, and friction, it was equally defined by the heroes who emerged from the shadows. As we transition into 2026, our collective resilience serves as a blueprint for the future. Though the world may feel more fractured than it was a year ago, the stories of individual bravery and the global demand for accountability remind us that progress is often born from our most difficult moments.
