UN Highlights Urgent Need to Protect Information Integrity

21 Apr 2026

The United Nations’ issue brief on information integrity highlights a growing global concern the erosion of trust in information in an increasingly digital world. At its core, information integrity refers to the accuracy, consistency and reliability of information, a standard that is now under significant threat from the rapid spread of misinformation, disinformation and hate speech.

While digital technologies have transformed communication for the better by connecting communities and amplifying diverse voices, they have also enabled false information to spread faster and wider than ever before. This has created a fragile information ecosystem where public trust is increasingly undermined, with serious consequences for democracy, human rights and social cohesion.

The United Nations warns that declining information integrity is not just a media issue, but a global challenge that affects peace, security and sustainable development. Disinformation can fuel conflict, deepen societal divisions and weaken confidence in institutions, while also hindering progress on critical global issues such as climate change and poverty reduction.

To address this, the UN calls for a coordinated, multi-stakeholder response. Governments, media organisations, technology platforms, civil society and individuals all have a role to play in safeguarding the information ecosystem. Central to this effort is the need to protect independent and pluralistic media, promote transparency, strengthen public awareness and ensure that digital platforms operate with greater accountability.

The brief also emphasises that solutions must balance the fight against harmful information with the protection of fundamental freedoms, particularly freedom of expression. Efforts to regulate content must not be misused to suppress dissent or restrict access to information.

Ultimately, the United Nations positions information integrity as a shared responsibility and a defining challenge of our time. Strengthening it will require global cooperation, ethical use of technology and a renewed commitment to truth, trust and transparency in the digital age.
