About ABU

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) brings together broadcasters from television and radio networks to digital media organisations across one of the most diverse and rapidly evolving regions in the world. At its core lies a defining principle, Unity in Diversity — a commitment to bringing together nations, cultures, languages, and perspectives, and transforming that diversity into a shared regional strength.

Established in 1964, the ABU is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organisation dedicated to advancing broadcasting and media cooperation across the Asia-Pacific. Today, it connects around 224 organisations across 66 countries, reaching audiences across half the globe. Headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the ABU serves as a central platform where members share content, exchange ideas, and collectively navigate the challenges shaping the future of media.

As the industry undergoes unprecedented transformation driven by artificial intelligence, digital disruption, shifting audience behaviours, misinformation, platform fragmentation, and evolving content consumption habits, the ABU continues to support its members in adapting to a new broadcasting era. From exploring the opportunities and ethical implications of AI and synthetic media to addressing issues surrounding trust, information integrity, sustainability, and freedom of the press, the ABU remains committed to strengthening the role of responsible and resilient media in society.

Spanning half the globe and reaching more than half the world’s population, the ABU is more than scale. It is a unifying force that connects the region as one broadcasting community. By championing innovation, encouraging collaboration across borders, supporting professional development, and fostering new approaches to storytelling and media delivery, the ABU ensures its members remain at the forefront of an industry in constant evolution.
